I want to be careful, though. This kind of treatment of abundance can easily and rightfully be criticized as simply an energy version of the “health and wealth” gospel and, for sure, in my treatment of it, it is not. Thus, let me paint some boundaries for this discussion, so that if you have an inner protestor like I do (you should hear her sometimes!), your inner protestor won’t stumble over what I have to say.
First, the spiritual abundance of Flow that I am discussing is a principle and not a law. Laws tend to be seen as black and white. A principle has more flex as it accounts for more dynamics at play than just one thing at a time. There are many, many spiritual principles at work in the universe. Some of them work for some people at certain levels of spiritual growth but not at all for others at different levels. Think of the natural law of gravity. It seems like a “black and white” or a “given” for all. But what about for the great spiritual masters for whom levitation is normal? What do we do with the “law” of gravity then? I would say that there are layers of laws in the natural world. There are the laws of standard Newtonian physics and then there are the laws of quantum physics. Two different layers that are both true but have different operating principles underlying them. There are layers of “laws” in the spiritual world too, just like the natural world, and therefore I prefer to call them principles so they are not seen as quite so hard and fast and unbreakable, nor as universally applicable.
The spiritual principle of Flow and Abundance that I am addressing here, then, is not applicable to all people at all times. This spiritual principle does not apply to the millions and billions of starving people around the globe. I am not suggesting: “Gosh, if only they could get their energy leaks cleaned up, they’d be sated and thriving!” Um, no.
As a corollary, I am also not suggesting then, that those who have millions and billions of moolah in their coffers are the masters of this spiritual principle. Faaaar from it. The spiritual principle the mega-wealthy might be challenged to live is to “Sell all you have and give to the poor, and come follow Me.” (Graham Kerr, the Galloping Gourmet, actually did this--sold everything and started over spiritually and financially--and because his soul purpose then became connected to Source, he has brought so much to the table for people in western and developing countries by way of instruction and innovation for excellent nutrition.)
So exactly to whom does this spiritual principle Flow that I am addressing here apply? I have seen that this spiritual principle is best for those who at least have an inkling as to what their soul’s calling is and have an indication of confirmation from the universe. When you’re pursuing your soul’s calling, you are in the Flow already. Your income may be negligible or large, but when you are in sync with the spiritual Flow of your being, then this issue of Abundance is applicable to you.
I am going to use the analogy of a garden hose to help with explanation. If you are connected to Source and your spiritual purpose, your garden hose is screwed onto the tap. There is some water flowing. You’re pretty sure your purpose is to take that garden hose of your life and water this one prized rose plant on the other side of the garden. But the flow of water isn’t what you would like it to be. You’re not getting the flow you know the tap and hose together are capable of. (By way of contrast, for people who are not consciously connected to Source and don’t know their spiritual purpose in life: Their garden hose hasn’t even been connected to the tap yet, so even though they may have leaks in their hose, too, since they aren’t connected consciously to Source, their leaks are irrelevant for this spiritual principle.)
So, one of the ways to address the lack of Flow is to look at your energy leaks. There are other areas to look at too, but energy leaks is a big one. If you’ve got your garden hose connected to the flow of water and you know the one plant you are to water is on the other side of the garden and you drag your hose out to that plant, but little water drips out, you know the problem isn’t that you’re not connected. The problem as you look back is that your hose has numerous large leaks and all the water is going where it isn’t supposed to go. You’ve got to fix the hose or get a different vessel to get that one precious plant watered.
So what are these energy leaks? First, assess how you use of all of your energy: your thoughts, your emotions, your time, your finances, your physical body, your home. These can be a little overwhelming so only take on one or two of these at a time. Where do you spend your thoughts? Do you spend them in negativity? Do you over emote when you have to tools to keep yourself calm? Do you fritter away your time on Facebook? (Yes, I’m talking to myself here!) Do you spend your money on unnecessary items? Do you eat junk food? Do you have any addictions? Is your home cluttered? Do you eat non-organic food? Do you drive a gas guzzler? Do you have a lot of credit card debt?
For sure, fixing energy leaks does not mean that you have to work and keep yourself rigidly in line all the time. In fact, imagination, play, generosity, spontaneity, and rest are necessary parts of a balanced life. But look at where you indulge—where you go unconscious in the spending of your minutes, dollars, food, material objects, thoughts, and emotions. Look at where you go extreme and out-of-balance, and have a hard time getting back into balance. These are your energy leaks.
Fixing them will show the Universe that you’re holding more integrity in your energy and therefore can handle more Flow. If you’re garden hose is leaking all the way from the tap to the rose bush, the solution is not to turn on the water more. That’s just going to mean more leaking. So fix the leaks and that will help the Flow flow more and show the universe you can hold more Flow as well.
Fixing energy leaks is just one of the ways to help the Flow flow well.
