Spontaneous Healing

or Healing is a Multi-Layered Thing (sing to the tune “Love is a Many Splendored Thing”)

How do I heal thyself? Let me count the ways. Okay, I’m on a [mis]quoting roll. Must be the spontaneous healing I had during a dream last night. My lower back was killing me. I injured my lower back over 25 years ago, but since I saw a miracle-working chiropractor in my New Joisey days, I’ve rarely had even a twinge of pain there. Then in the past few weeks: it might have been the new shoes, the new car (with different seat), or my prayers to completely heal an injury in my soza muscle, whatever it was, my lower back was getting my attention again. Last night after going to sleep, my back actually woke me up it was in so much pain with deep throbbing, to boot. Uh-oh, I do not want a ruptured disc like my husband had, I thought. So, I got up and took an ibuprofen and put some ice on the area. That numbed it enough for me to go back to sleep after I had said some more prayers for insight into how to heal the area and did a little energy work on myself in the area.

After falling back asleep I had a series of dreams and then in the middle of one of the dreams, I woke up within the dream and felt a zzzz-zzzz-zzzzz over my lower spine. It felt like the mark of Zorro was being made right over my area of concern. I then understood what the emotional “issue in my tissue” was that I demonstrated I healed in the dream. (I’ve found I’ve healed a lot of issues in dreams, and in fact, I’ve often asked to heal my issues in my dreams—it makes for a lot less drama and cost in the material world!) This insight caused me to wake up completely and I realized not only was the pain in my lower back gone so was the dull throbbing! I also noted that it was well beyond the time the ibuprofen would’ve still been working. Now that I’m up and around, my lower back feels tender like the tender shoot of a new bud but not sore—more like I had a vigorous massage in between my vertebrae.

I’ve had numerous spontaneous healings over the years, but I want to explain what exactly that means because “What is a spontaneous healing?” was the most asked question I received at my Confessions book talks. But first, let me answer a more preliminary question.

What is healing in general?

Healing originates from our core, our Divine Self, that is always Whole and never needs any kind of healing. As embodied humans, though, we exist not only with this Whole Divine Core, but also with a physical body, along with emotional, mental, soul, and other energetic bodies or “levels” and these non-core levels can all experience limitation, lack, illness, disease, etc. When any part of us at any non-core level heals, it impacts all the bodies and levels because though multidimensional, we are still a unified, inter-connected, being. The Wholeness that we are at our Core level is able to reach into our many other levels and bodies and shift one or more of our layers closer to the Truth of our original Beingness. This then is my basic definition for healing: a shift closer to the Wholeness of our True Self.

What is a spontaneous healing then?

Healing can happen instantly (in no time) which is what is generally meant by a “spontaneous healing,” but healing can also take place over time (and usually most people experience healing this way). Even a so-called spontaneous healing may actually be the result of much inner work on one’s spiritual, mental, and/or emotional levels over a long period of time. Spontaneous healings may happen due to the intervention of the Divine Self, any being of the Light, angel, or guide, or a human healer.

How do I have a spontaneous healing?

1) Acknowledge Resistance. I think most people with any kind of injury or illness would love to have a spontaneous healing. Am I right? There are always a few who would hang onto their disease because they have become so strongly invested in it and identified with it, they wouldn’t know how to live without it. As Jesus the great healer said, “Do you want to be made well?” implying that maybe a few of us would prefer not to be made well. “OMG, what would happen to my life if I were well? Everything would change! Stress! Stress! Stress! I’d have to be responsible for my life. I’d have to change my worldview that an instant healing was even possible. What would I say to everyone back at the office about how I suddenly got well—I know they would think I had been faking it…” In other words a healing might be more stressful to some than continuing on with the illness, understandably so, and so first off, it is wise to look for this ever so slight resistance within, even in those of us who SWEAR we just want to be well and healed, right now.

2) Ask. This seems simple enough, but a lot of people don’t think to ask for healing! I ask again and again and again if necessary. After asking, though, I let it go for awhile and see what happens. If in the meantime, I get an insight into some emotional, mental, and/or soul work that needs doing, I do it to the best of my ability. I also do energy work on myself to the extent that I can, with visualization, moving energy, balancing levels, etc. I ask for help from other wise healers and spiritual friends, if needed. I also affirm strongly that who I am is Whole needing no healing and I know that this shall be reflected in my many layers and levels and bodies in whatever way is best for the unfolding Divine Plan.

For example, though I just experienced a spontaneous healing of my lower back, I’ve actually been asking for a healing of my soaz muscle in my hip. For a few years I have done many layers of healing of many issues in my tissues in the area, but physically it still remains a sore spot. However, I know that one of the reasons my soaz is so problematic is because of this old lower back injury, so perhaps, my “spontaneous” lower back healing is the first of several physical healings I will need to start healing my soaz. The back injury, being the original injury, needed to heal first. Who knows? But I am oh so grateful for that healing last night. It reminded me yet again, to keep asking, to keep seeking, to keep knocking. Ask and you shall receive. Seek you and shall find. Knock and the door shall be opened unto you.

3) Accept. Whether the healing happens how you want it, when you want it, or not, accept what is. Accepting what is does not contradict the previous step of continuing to ask and intend healing. Accepting is simply another form of healing. In my paradigm Grace is always and ever present. Grace can be spontaneously given through no apparent effort on our part, but it can also be accessed at any time with a grateful, open heart no matter what our circumstances. Practicing acceptance and gratitude for what is helps access the Wholeness within that is so strong, you can find the light in any darkness and the healing and growth in the midst of any ongoing disease. Your Divine Core Self knows that all healing in our bodies is merely temporary, and thus It is far more invested in our long-term soul well-being, which may or may not be facilitated by a physical or even an emotional/mental healing. As frustrating as this can be when we want to be well, yielding and surrendering to the greater wisdom can actually—paradoxically—bring a greater healing, and even on occasion, a spontaneous one.

With myself, one of the reasons I am intending healing for my soaz muscle is so that I can run again. For various reasons, for the past ten years, I have been unable to do my favorite form of exercise. I may not be able to for the rest of my life. I have accepted this and found gratitude for the long contemplative walks I take instead, and for the exercise bike I found for free on my birthday last year that allows me to exercise while watching a favorite TV show or movie. I accept this condition my body is currently in and give gratitude for the many ways I am well physically, even if the complete healing of my hip area never happens in this life. I accept and I ask, while also affirming that the Divine Love that is in me (and each of us) wants to fully express Itself through me and my body for the benefit of all.

Oh and I just love that the Divine Love expressed itself to me last night through the mark of Zorro, proving that you just never know how a healing might happen!
